Healthy eating habits (Health Education Programme)
Autor: Marina Ivčin, 30. 4. 2013.

In our  English textbook "New Project 4" there is a whole unit dealing with our HEALTH. We have learnt about us and our body, about different diets and healthy food. We revised what we already knew but we found out something new. We know, we all should exercise more, avoid junk food, don’t even start smoking , protect our skin, wear shoes that fit our feet properly and many other things. People that do all these things are generally happier, healthier and in better shape. They also live much longer.

It is important that we eat all kinds of food. Not just meat. Vegetables and fruits are very healthy. We should eat those more often, but it is the best if we eat all of that combined. We know that vitamins and minerals are very important part of our diet, particularly when we are teenagers, because our body is growing then.  We have learnt there are two kinds of vitamins and those are: fat-soluble ones (A,D and E) and water-soluble ones(B and C). Our body can't store water-soluble ones so we need to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables rich in vitamin B and C.   We get vitamin A from fruits, vegetables, milk and eggs, vitamin B from bread, fish, meat, beans and eggs, vitamin C from most fruit and vegetables, vitamin D from sunshine and fish and eggs too, and finally, vitamin E from bread, fish, nuts and eggs, of course. Vitamins are good for our skin and eyes, our  teeth and bones, they give us energy, protect us from infections and many other things.
There are also minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium) which are important for our bones and teeth. They are also very important for our blood to carry oxygen around our body. We get those mostly from meat and fish but you can find them in cheese, beans and not to forget, in eggs too.

Finally, in the test there was a text about different diets in different parts of the world where we could learn a few things: Average Americans eat 1500 calories more than they need (2200 calories) every day what is the main reason why there are so many obese people there. People in different parts of the world eat the same food but use the ingredients in different ways: in Asia they eat more rice and vegetables and add meat just to spice the meal, whereas in Argentina they eat a lot of meat but only the non-fat parts.

“But maybe the best advice comes from those French people who can eat a lot and stay slim. Their secret – take your time and put your knife and fork down between each bite. People who eat slowlyenjoy the taste more. They also know when they have eaten too much ! “

Ivan Poldrugač,  8c.
